FPL Free Hit strategy: when to play the chip
By Arasi Rex · Updated 10 August 2026 · 8 min read
The FPL Free Hit is the most overrated chip in Fantasy Premier League, and the giveaway is how it is marketed to new managers: as Blank Gameweek insurance. The Free Hit gives you unlimited free transfers for one Gameweek and your squad reverts at the next deadline, so it looks purpose-built for a week when your players have no fixture and score zero. That is exactly the wrong use of it, because a Free Hit only ever pays you once, in a single Gameweek, while the managers who hoard it for the perfect Blank Gameweek usually end up burning it on a week where two -4 hits would have done the same job. The chip also has a hard use-by date, because the first set of four chips must be used before the Gameweek 19 deadline, 13:30 GMT on Saturday 2 January 2027, and cannot be carried over. FPL Free Hit strategy is really about two decisions: which Gameweek deserves the chip, and which Gameweek would survive without it.
What the FPL Free Hit actually does
The official definition is short. Free Hit: unlimited free transfers for one Gameweek; your squad reverts at the next deadline. You can bring in anyone, from any club, within the normal squad rules of 15 players, 11 starters and a £100.0m budget with a maximum of 3 players per club, and when the Gameweek is over your original squad is back, untouched. Nothing you do on a Free Hit Gameweek is permanent: the players you sell are not really sold, and the players you buy are not really bought, so no team value changes hands and no price-change profit is banked. When you sell a player normally, the selling price is the average of the price you paid and his current price, so buy at £5.0m, sell at £5.4m and you receive £5.2m, but a Free Hit does not work like that, because your squad reverts. That is the first thing most managers misunderstand: the chip is a loan, not a purchase.
The Free Hit is one of eight chips, in two sets of four, one set per half of the season. Only one chip may be played per Gameweek, and the others in the set are the Wildcard, which makes all transfers free for the Gameweek, the Triple Captain, which triples your captain's points, and the Bench Boost, which adds your bench players' points to your Gameweek total, all covered in our FPL chips guide. On a Free Hit Gameweek the automatic substitutions work normally, so your bench still rescues you from a starter who plays 0 minutes, and bench order is still locked at the deadline, the same rules our FPL autosubs guide explains. The one thing a Free Hit does not do is protect you from a player who plays 0 minutes: a player must play exactly 0 minutes to be auto-subbed out, and even 1 minute of match time keeps them in your starting XI.
When to play the FPL Free Hit
The strongest uses of the Free Hit are fixture-based, and they come in two flavours: the Blank Gameweek and the Double Gameweek. In a Blank Gameweek there are fewer than the normal 10 matches, at least one club has no Premier League fixture, and players from that club have no chance of scoring Fantasy points, so they score zero. Blank Gameweeks are caused by Premier League matches being postponed, typically because of a fixture clash with domestic cup competitions, and when at least two clubs are without a fixture in the same Gameweek the problem is big enough to plan around, mechanics our blank and double gameweeks guide lays out. Last season, Gameweek 31 fell on the same weekend as the EFL Cup final between Arsenal and Manchester City, their league fixtures were postponed, and four teams blanked as a result.
This is where the strategy gets uncomfortable. A Free Hit in a Blank Gameweek replaces the players who have no fixture with players who do, which is the textbook use, but it is also the low-value use, because a Blank Gameweek with a handful of teams missing is a week where a couple of -4 hits can cover the gaps without spending the chip. A transfer beyond the free allowance costs -4, and up to five free transfers can be rolled, so the cost of patching a Blank Gameweek by hand is often single digits. The high-value Free Hit is the one played into a Double Gameweek, where at least one club plays two Premier League fixtures in one Gameweek and its players get two chances to score Fantasy points. A Free Hit lets you load three players from one double-gameweek club and three from another, within the 3-per-club limit, and that is a week where the chip multiplies instead of treading water.
Captaincy, bench and the other chips on a Free Hit
Your captaincy still works normally on a Free Hit Gameweek. If your captain plays in his Premier League match, he scores double points, and if he fails to feature at all, the armband passes to your vice-captain, who scores double instead; if neither plays, no player is doubled. In a Double Gameweek, the captain only needs to play in one of his two fixtures to keep the armband, and the double applies to both matches, the detail our FPL captaincy strategy guide covers. That matters on a Free Hit because you are choosing the captain from a one-week squad, so the fixture list is everything: a captain with two fixtures is worth twice the risk of a captain with one.
The Free Hit also has to be planned around the other chips, because only one chip may be played per Gameweek and the whole first set shares the same deadline. The Wildcard changes your squad permanently and the Free Hit does not, so they answer different questions, and the FPL wildcard strategy guide makes the distinction explicit: the wildcard is a rebuild, the Free Hit is a one-week loan. The Bench Boost is the natural rival, because a Bench Boost scores with all 15 players and leaves no bench to substitute from, so you would never play the two together, and you would rarely play the Triple Captain in the same week as a Free Hit, because the captaincy is the one spot you would rather control on both.
The Gameweek 19 deadline decides everything
The 2026/27 season runs 21 August 2026 to 30 May 2027, with 33 weekend rounds and 5 midweek rounds, and the first set of chips expires at the Gameweek 19 deadline, 13:30 GMT on Saturday 2 January 2027. Unused first-half chips do not carry over, and a fresh set of all four becomes available from Gameweek 20. So your Free Hit, like your other three first-half chips, has a hard expiry in early January, and the calendar the 2026/27 season key dates guide tracks is the real structure of the decision. The Gameweek 1 deadline fell on Friday 21 August 2026, and from there you have 19 Gameweeks to find the fixture cluster that deserves the chip.
The discipline that separates good Free Hit managers from the rest is refusing to let it rot. A chip that expires unused is worth nothing, and a chip played into a mediocre Gameweek because the deadline is approaching is worth almost nothing, so the skill is knowing when the fixture list gives you the moment. The blank and double gameweeks tend to cluster around cup weekends through the first half of the season, and the official Price Change Predictor, new for 2026/27, which uses official transfer-activity data to show each player's progress towards a price rise or fall, can help you time a Free Hit week so the players you bring in are the ones the market is about to move. Defensive Contribution points remain unchanged for the season, confirmed by the Premier League on 20 July 2026, so the floor for budget defenders and midfielders is a known quantity when you are picking a one-week squad. The Free Hit is the only chip that gives you a fresh team for a single week and gives it back untouched, and that is a tool for multiplying points in a Double Gameweek, not for treading water in a Blank one. Save it for the week where the fixture list pays you twice.
FAQ
When should I play my FPL Free Hit?
The best Free Hit targets a Double Gameweek, where players from clubs playing twice get two chances to score. A Free Hit in a Blank Gameweek works, but it is usually the low-value use, because a couple of -4 hits can cover a normal blank without spending the chip.
Does the FPL Free Hit change my squad permanently?
No. Free Hit gives you unlimited free transfers for one Gameweek and your squad reverts at the next deadline. Nothing is permanent, no team value is banked, and no price-change profit is made.
Can I use the Free Hit and Bench Boost in the same Gameweek?
No. Only one chip may be played per Gameweek. The chips are the Wildcard, Free Hit, Triple Captain and Bench Boost, eight in total in two sets of four.
What happens if I do not use my Free Hit by the deadline?
The first set of chips expires at the Gameweek 19 deadline, 13:30 GMT on Saturday 2 January 2027, and unused chips do not carry over. A fresh set of all four becomes available from Gameweek 20.
Does my captain still score double on a Free Hit Gameweek?
Yes. If your captain plays he scores double points, and if he plays 0 minutes the vice-captain scores double instead. In a Double Gameweek the captain only needs to play in one of his two fixtures, and the double applies to both matches.
Key takeaways
- The Free Hit gives you unlimited free transfers for one Gameweek and your squad reverts at the next deadline, so it is a one-week loan, not a rebuild.
- The highest-value Free Hit is played into a Double Gameweek, where clubs play twice and players score twice; the Blank Gameweek use is the textbook one but usually the weakest.
- Only one chip may be played per Gameweek, and the whole first set of four expires at the Gameweek 19 deadline, 13:30 GMT on Saturday 2 January 2027.
- On a Free Hit, autosubs and bench order work normally, and your captaincy still follows the standard rules, including the double-gameweek captain rule.
- An unused Free Hit is worth nothing: the fixture calendar of the first 19 Gameweeks decides when the chip pays, and the Price Change Predictor helps you time the week.
