FPL autosubs explained: when substitutes auto-enter your team

By Arasi Rex · Updated 7 August 2026 · 5 min read

If a player in your starting 11 plays zero minutes in a gameweek, FPL automatically brings on your first eligible bench player at the end of the gameweek. Bench order decides who comes in and the formation rules decide whether they are allowed to, but even a one-minute cameo from the starter blocks the whole thing.

When an FPL autosub triggers

The trigger is exactly zero minutes. A starter who plays one minute, even a cameo in the 89th minute worth minus points, keeps his place in your starting 11 and blocks the bench. A yellow or red card also counts as having played, so a sent-off starter is not replaced either.

If a starter misses the whole gameweek, the game checks your bench from position 1 to position 3 and brings in the first eligible player. The substitution happens once, when the gameweek is settled, not at the moment the player is confirmed missing.

Bench order and the formation rules

FPL does not optimise: it follows your bench order strictly, even when a later bench player scored more. If your bench order is a defender with 6 points first and a forward with 9 points third, the defender comes in, provided the formation still works. The player who scored 9 stays on the bench. Bench order always beats bench points.

The formation constraint is the part most managers get wrong. After the substitution your team must still have at least one goalkeeper, three defenders, two midfielders and one forward. If the first bench player would break that, FPL skips to the next eligible player. In a 3-4-3, a missing forward can be replaced by a defender to make a 4-4-2, but a missing defender cannot be replaced by a midfielder if that would leave you with only two defenders.

The bench goalkeeper only ever replaces the starting goalkeeper. He never comes in for an outfield player, and an outfield substitute never takes the goalkeeper's place.

When autosubs are processed

Automatic substitutions are settled when the gameweek is finalised, not during the matches. In 2026/27, gameweek scores become final at 09:00 UK time on the day after the last match of the gameweek, which is when autosubs are locked in. During the gameweek you can only predict what will happen.

That is why everything is set before the deadline: transfers, captaincy, the starting 11 and the bench order all stop changing at the gameweek deadline. If a starter is a late fitness doubt, the bench you set on Friday night is the bench you get.

Autosubs, captaincy and chips

The armband does not move with the player. If your captain plays zero minutes, the vice-captain's points are doubled instead, and the bench player who comes in for him scores as a normal player: no double, no armband. If both your captain and vice-captain play zero minutes, nobody scores double that gameweek, even if a bench player hauls. The full rules are in our FPL captaincy strategy guide.

The Bench Boost chip changes the picture completely: when it is active, all 15 players in your squad score points, so there is no bench to substitute from. During a Free Hit or Wildcard gameweek, autosubs work exactly as normal. See our FPL chips guide for how each chip interacts.

Autosubs in blank and double gameweeks

In a blank gameweek, players from clubs without a fixture log zero minutes, so autosubs can trigger across your whole team. This is why a bench of players who actually have fixtures matters in a blank week: if your bench also blanked, no substitution happens and you take a zero in that slot. Planning the bench around the double and blank gameweek calendar is a season-long skill, not a panic move.

In a double gameweek the bar is higher. A player must play zero minutes across both of his fixtures to be auto-subbed out. If a starter misses the first match but plays in the second, he stays in your starting 11.

Setting your bench order

Your bench order is worth more points across a season than most of your transfers, and it costs nothing to set. It takes thirty seconds before each deadline. Put the bench player most likely to both play and score at position 1, your next best at position 2, and the cheapest non-player at position 3. Reorder every week: fixtures change, rotation risks shift, and the player you benched in Gameweek 1 is a different proposition by Gameweek 20. Get the order right and FPL autosubs quietly add points all season; get it wrong and they cost you every single gameweek.

FAQ

Why didn't my FPL substitute come on? Either the starter played at least one minute, the bench player would have broken your formation, or the bench player also played zero minutes.

Can all four of my substitutes come on? The bench goalkeeper only replaces the starting goalkeeper, the three outfield bench spots cover outfield starters, and every switch must keep a valid formation, so four autosubs in one gameweek is rare but possible.

Does my autosub get double points? No. If your captain plays zero minutes, the vice-captain takes the double. A bench player who comes on as an automatic substitute scores normal points.

When do FPL autosubs happen? At the end of the gameweek, when it is finalised. In 2026/27 scores lock at 09:00 UK time on the day after the last match.

Key takeaways

  • Autosubs trigger only when a starter plays exactly zero minutes in a gameweek; a one-minute cameo blocks the sub.
  • FPL takes the first eligible player in bench order, not the highest scorer, and the formation must stay valid with at least one goalkeeper, three defenders, two midfielders and one forward.
  • The bench goalkeeper only replaces the starting goalkeeper.
  • The armband never transfers to an autosub; the vice-captain takes the double if the captain plays zero minutes.
  • In a blank gameweek autosubs are everywhere; in a double gameweek a player must miss both fixtures to be replaced.
