Premier League Most Shots: Goals and Teams That Matter
By Arasi Rex · Updated 15 August 2026 · 6 min read
Volume is the default starting point for shot-based analysis, but the Premier League most-shots story is not that simple. Arsenal won the title with 71 goals and 27 against, while Man City scored 77 and finished seven points behind. That gap is where the shooting efficiency conversation actually starts.
Key numbers
Start with the top of the table. Arsenal's 71 goals were not the most in the division. Man City scored 77, the highest total, and Man Utd's 69 was third. The difference between City and Arsenal was not attack. It was defence: City conceded 35, Arsenal conceded 27. That eight-goal gap in goals against is worth more than the six-goal gap in goals for when the points are counted at the end.
| Pos | Team | GF | GA | GD | Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arsenal | 71 | 27 | +44 | 85 |
| 2 | Man City | 77 | 35 | +42 | 78 |
| 3 | Man Utd | 69 | 50 | +19 | 71 |
| 4 | Aston Villa | 56 | 49 | +7 | 65 |
| 5 | Liverpool | 63 | 53 | +10 | 60 |
Liverpool's 63 goals were bettered only by the top three, but they conceded 53 and finished fifth on 60 points. Bournemouth, with 58 goals and 54 conceded, lost only seven games and finished sixth on 57. A team that avoids defeat as often as Bournemouth did does not need a 77-goal attack to stay relevant.
Aston Villa scored 56, fewer than Liverpool, Bournemouth and Chelsea, and still finished above all three because they conceded 49. The goals table and the league table are not the same thing.
The table also explains the relegation fight. Wolves scored 27, the fewest in the league, and conceded 68. They finished bottom on 20 points. Burnley scored more, 38, but conceded 75, the worst defensive number in the division. West Ham managed 46 goals and still finished 18th because they conceded 65. The bottom three were not just weak attacks. They were also teams that could not stop goals at the other end.
Top performers
The individual scoring table gives the same lesson from a different angle. Igor Thiago was the league's top scorer with 22 goals in 38 appearances. His Brentford team scored 55, so one player was responsible for 40 per cent of the club's output. That is an extreme reliance. It carried Brentford to ninth, but it also explains why they were never in the top-four conversation: when the main scorer has only one assist, the attack depends on service.
Only one player reached 20 goals. The gap between first and second in the scoring chart was six goals, the same as the gap between Arsenal and City's goal totals. The Golden Boot was not a race. The title was.
| Player | Team | Goals | Assists | Appearances |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Igor Thiago | Brentford | 22 | 1 | 38 |
| Ollie Watkins | Aston Villa | 16 | 3 | 37 |
| João Pedro | Chelsea | 15 | 5 | 35 |
| Viktor Gyökeres | Arsenal | 14 | 1 | 36 |
| Junior Kroupi | Bournemouth | 13 | 0 | 33 |
Aston Villa had a more balanced version of the same idea. Ollie Watkins scored 16 and added three assists. Morgan Rogers scored 10 and assisted six. Together they carried Villa's 56 goals to a fourth-place finish. Villa did not have the highest-scoring attack in the top four, but they had enough finishers and a defence that conceded only 49, which was better than Liverpool's 53 and Man Utd's 50.
Chelsea provide the clearest warning about reading goal totals as quality. João Pedro scored 15, Cole Palmer scored 10 and Enzo Fernández scored 10. Three double-digit scorers, and Chelsea still finished 10th on 52 points with 58 goals for and 52 against. Compare that with Man Utd, who also had three players in double figures: Bryan Mbeumo with 11, Benjamin Sesko with 11 and Matheus Cunha with 10. United finished third on 71 points. Both teams had three double-digit scorers, but United had 11 more goals and finished 19 points ahead.
Arsenal did not need a 20-goal player. Viktor Gyökeres scored 14 in 36 appearances and Bukayo Saka contributed seven goals and five assists. No Arsenal player reached 15, yet the team scored 71. That is the signature of an attack where chances are spread across the pitch rather than concentrated in one striker.
Man City's top scorer in this data is Phil Foden with seven goals and five assists in 33 appearances. That is a reminder that a 77-goal team does not need a single elite finisher. It needs enough good ones. The problem was that the defence gave too many back.
What the Premier League most-shots table gets wrong
Most-shots conversations reward the wrong behaviour. If you only looked at goals for, you would conclude Man City were the best attacking side. They were, by that narrow measure. But they lost six games and drew nine, while Arsenal won 26 and lost five. The title gap is not about who scored more. It is about which team turned scoring into winning.
At the other end, Sunderland finished seventh with only 42 goals. That is the lowest total of any side in the top half of the table. They did it with a goal difference of minus six, which is normally the profile of a relegation candidate. The reason it worked is that they conceded 48, not 60, and they drew 12 games. A team that takes a point from a dead game and keeps the scoreboard clean does not need to chase the game.
Bournemouth drew 18 games, more than anyone else. That is a useful corrective for the most-shots conversation: shot volume without defensive control is just noise. The teams that finish highest are the ones who convert their chances into wins and do not give the opponent easy chances. That is why Arsenal are champions. Their 71 goals and 27 against are two sides of the same number, and both point in the same direction.
