FPL Gameweek 9-differentials: Three low-owned picks to outscore the template

By Arasi Rex · Updated 15 August 2026 · 7 min read

The template has you chasing Haaland's captain armband every week, but Gameweek 9 is where you can make ground. Three players under 10% ownership have fixtures that reward a gamble. The data from last season tells us who is capable of a spike, and the matchups support it. Here is where the edge is.

The fixtures table

Home Away Matchup assessment
Brentford Nott'm Forest Even. Brentford solid at home, Forest decent away.
Chelsea Man Utd Tough. Both mid-table last season, unpredictable.
Liverpool Arsenal Banter. Two top sides, high risk for clean sheets.
Man City Brighton City heavy favourites. Brighton leaky away.
Newcastle Everton Newcastle slight favourites. Everton poor travellers.
Spurs Crystal Palace Palace solid defensively, Spurs inconsistent.
Bournemouth Leeds Bournemouth good at home, Leeds vulnerable.
Aston Villa Fulham Villa strong at Villa Park. Fulham mid-table.

Captain picks (3 ranked)

1. Erling Haaland (155 cost, 74.8% owned) - The obvious. Man City at home to Brighton is the fixture everyone wants. Haaland scored 27 goals last season with an xG of 25.50. Brighton's defence allowed 46 goals last term, 8th worst. The only reason to avoid him is if you are chasing rank and need a differential. But he is the safest captaincy of the week.

2. Antoine Semenyo (85 cost, 22.6% owned) - Already outside the differential bracket? Yes. But if you want a captain with upside and still hold Haaland, Semenyo is the alternative. He scored 17 goals and 6 assists last season from midfield. Bournemouth host Leeds, who conceded 56 goals (14th most). Semenyo's xG of 11.10 underperformed his actual goals, regress, but the fixture is strong.

3. Morgan Rogers (75 cost, 29.9% owned) - Another borderline differential. Rogers had 10 goals and 8 assists last season. Aston Villa face Fulham, who conceded 51 goals (11th). Villa scored 56 at home last term. Rogers is a points-per-game 4.6, consistent. If you are aggressive, captain him over Haaland.

Players to bring in (4-5)

1. Morgan Gibbs-White (80 cost, 11.6% owned)

Gibbs-White scored 15 goals and 4 assists last season for Nottingham Forest. Forest travel to Brentford, a side that conceded 52 goals (10th most). Gibbs-White is the creative hub, takes set pieces, and has an xG of 10.81. At 11.6% ownership he is a genuine differential. He outscored many midfielders at a similar price.

2. James Garner (60 cost, 0.7% owned) - Injury warning

Garner is currently flagged with a groin injury and 0% chance of playing, per the source data. Do not bring him in. He is not available. I include this as a reminder to check injury status. Move on.

3. Enzo Fernández (70 cost, 5.5% owned)

Enzo had 10 goals and 5 assists last season from central midfield. Chelsea host Manchester United, who finished 3rd but conceded 50 goals. Enzo's xG of 11.26 suggests his goal tally was about right. At 5.5% owned, he is a strong midfield punt if you need a cheap route into Chelsea's attack.

4. Kevin Schade (60 cost, 2.2% owned)

Schade scored 8 goals and 5 assists for Brentford last season. Brentford home to Nottingham Forest is a winnable game. Schade's xG of 12.08 was high - he underperformed his expected output, meaning he could be due a spike. He is a cheap mid-priced differential.

5. Marcus Tavernier (60 cost, 1.9% owned)

Tavernier had 7 goals and 4 assists for Bournemouth. Bournemouth vs Leeds is one of the better fixtures of the round. Tavernier's xG of 9.06 indicates he underperformed - regression likely upward. At 1.9% ownership, he is an excellent differential for those wanting a Bournemouth attacker besides Semenyo.

Players to move on (2-3)

1. Bruno Fernandes (120 cost, 48.7% owned)

Fernandes is the third most-owned midfielder. He has a tough fixture away to Chelsea, who conceded 52 goals but also finished 10th. More concerning: his underlying numbers from last season - 9 goals and 24 assists, but xA of 12.28 suggests his assist count was inflated. Regression likely. At 48.7% ownership, moving him on for a differential could pay off.

2. Cole Palmer (cost not in source? Actually Palmer not in fpl data? Wait, Palmer is in topPlayers list but not in fpl data. He is not in the fpl array. So we cannot use him. Move on from any high-ownership player like Bukayo Saka (10.6%, but not high). Actually Saka is 10.6% owned, not that high. Better to mention João Pedro? He is 54.2% owned but has a tough fixture at Liverpool. Yes, João Pedro is a forward with 15 goals and 9 assists, but Liverpool defence allowed 53 goals (13th), but Anfield is tough. His ownership is very high. Consider moving on to a cheaper differential forward.

3. James Tarkowski (60 cost, 9.9% owned) - if you have him

Tarkowski is a defender from Everton, who travel to Newcastle. Everton conceded 50 goals last season, Newcastle scored 53. Clean sheet unlikely. Tarkowski's points come from clean sheets and bonus. The fixture is poor. Replace him with a defender from Bournemouth or Aston Villa.

The differential

Antoine Semenyo is the pick of the week, but the true differential for Gameweek 9 is Morgan Gibbs-White. At 11.6% ownership, he is not completely off the radar, but he is well below the template. Forest visit Brentford, a team that finished 9th but had a neutral goal difference (55 scored, 52 conceded). Gibbs-White scored 15 goals last season - that is elite midfield output. His xG of 10.81 suggests he was a bit lucky, but even so, he is a proven FPL asset. With Neco Williams and Elliot Anderson providing support, Gibbs-White is the focal point. If you want one player to separate your team from the crowd, he is it.

FAQ

Is Haaland a must-own for Gameweek 9? Yes. Man City at home to Brighton is the standout fixture. Haaland averages 6.8 points per game and costs 155. The only reason to sell him is if you need funds for multiple differentials, but that is risky.

Should I captain a differential like Semenyo? If you are chasing a rank increase, yes. Semenyo has a 22.6% ownership and a great fixture. But Haaland is the safety play. The best strategy is to captain Haaland and use your transfers for differentials in the rest of the squad.

Which defenders are good differentials this week? Virgil van Dijk (16.2% owned, Liverpool vs Arsenal) is not a differential but is an option. Better: Daniel Muñoz (11.7% owned) from Palace at Spurs - Palace are solid defensively and he scored 4 goals last season.

What about Brentford attackers? Igor Thiago (16% owned) is not a differential, but Kevin Schade (2.2% owned) is. Thiago scored 22 goals last season - the best value forward. But his ownership is 16%, so he is borderline. Schade is the real differential.
