Every club ever relegated from the Premier League
By Arasi Rex · Updated 9 August 2026 · 6 min read
Forty-three clubs have been relegated from the Premier League since the competition began in 1992/93, and the drop has happened 103 times in 34 seasons. The three most recent clubs relegated from the Premier League are West Ham United, Burnley and Wolves, who went down at the end of 2025/26. Six founding clubs have never been relegated at all, and the complete list of everyone who has gone down is below.
How Premier League relegation works
The bottom three in the final table are relegated to the Championship, and three clubs come up in their place: two automatic promotion places and one via the play-offs. The league has 20 clubs, each playing 38 matches home and away, which makes 380 matches a season. The mechanics, the timing and the financial consequences are all covered in our guide to Premier League relegation.
The numbers have only ever changed once. The Premier League began with 22 clubs in 1992/93 and was reduced to 20 in 1995/96. To make that work, 1994/95 was the only season in which four clubs were relegated: Crystal Palace, Norwich City, Leicester City and Ipswich Town. Since then it has been a strict three down, three up, every single year.

Sixteen of the 43 clubs have been relegated exactly once, and that group includes some famous names: Aston Villa, whose only drop came in 2015/16, plus Portsmouth, Wigan Athletic, Blackpool and, most recently, Luton Town in 2023/24. At the other end, Norwich City have been relegated six times, more than any other club, and Leicester City, West Bromwich Albion and Burnley have each gone down five times.
The clubs never relegated from the Premier League
Only six clubs have been ever-present since 1992/93: Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur. All of them had long top-flight runs before the Premier League existed too: Arsenal have been in the top division since 1919/20, Everton since 1954/55, Liverpool since 1962/63, Manchester United since 1975/76, Tottenham since 1978/79 and Chelsea since 1989/90.
Here is the claim that deserves more scrutiny: being never relegated is a privilege of staying solvent and stable as much as of being good. Manchester City are one of the biggest clubs in the country, yet they have been relegated twice in the Premier League era, in 1995/96 and 2000/01. Aston Villa, a founding member and former European champions, went down in 2015/16. Everton finished 13th in 2025/26, and Tottenham survived on the final day of the season in 17th place, with West Ham relegated below them. The six are not simply the six best clubs of the era; they are the clubs that never had a bad enough season, or a bad enough balance sheet, to fall.
Two more current clubs, Brighton and Brentford, have also never been relegated from the Premier League. They simply have not been around as long: Brighton have been in the league since 2017/18 and Brentford since 2021/22. If you are asking who has a clean record across the full history of the competition, the answer remains the six.
The 2025/26 relegated clubs and the 2026/27 promotion class
The 2025/26 season sent down West Ham United in 18th place on 39 points, Burnley in 19th on 22 and Wolves in 20th on 20. Tottenham, the club whose streak was at risk, finished 17th on 41 points and stayed up. Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town come up in their place for 2026/27; the details are in our guide to the promoted clubs.
None of the three promoted clubs is a stranger to this list. Coventry City have been relegated once, in 2000/01, and have spent the 25 years since outside the top flight. Hull City have been relegated three times and Ipswich Town three times, Ipswich most recently in 2024/25, when they went straight back down after winning promotion. For West Ham it was a third Premier League relegation, after 2002/03 and 2010/11.
